What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for ‘Voice Over Internet Protocol’, and is an alternative to the traditional telephone system, as calls are send via the Internet rather that the Standard Telephone Network.  VOIP has many advantages in that it offers cheap, unlimited local and long distance calls over a robust, reliable connection, and can be carried out using any Internet enabled computer or laptop so there is no need for additional telephone equipment or fixed line connections.

How Does VoIP Work?

You will need a high speed Internet connection to your computer from either a cable or DSL provider, and also an account with the VoIP provider.  Phone calls can be placed as normal, and the data is sent through a VoIP router which converts it into a digital format that can be sent over the Internet, and then is converted back into a phone signal again so that it can be received quickly and clearly by any phone line in the world.  This means you can carry on with your phone calls as normal, and the person on the other end of the line will never even realise that you are using a VoIP service.

What are the Costs of VoIP

VoIP is much cheaper than a traditional phone service as it does not use the Standard Phone Network and the information is sent over the Internet so you can call long distances and internal numbers very easily and at little cost.  If you do not use the telephone very much then you can get basic VoIP package with up to 500 minutes inclusive from well under $20 per month, or for around just $25 per month you should be able to get an unlimited VoIP call package.  Some VoIP plans even offer free international calls, and all of the basic plans come with caller ID and voicemail at no extra cost.
